Sightseeing
Amman:
Visit
the Roman Amphitheater in Downtown, the Temple of Hercules, the
Citadel overlooking the city, the Jordanian Archaeological
Museum, Ashrafiah Mosque and King Hussein Sport city. Drive through
the modern city and visit King Abdullah Mosque and the native souks
and bazaars.
Petra:
Drive
south from Amman to visit the Red Rose city of Petra which is hidden
away in encircling craggy rock mountains beyond the Dead
Sea. The entrance to this ancient city isthrough the narrow "
Siq " some 2 miles ride on horses for about 15 minutes. Tour
freelyon the rock-carved streets around the rock-carved, temples,
tombs and dwellings.
Wadi
Rum: Wadi Rum, the moonscape terrain of ancient river-beds,
towering cliffs and smooth, pastel-colored sands. A Nabataean
temple lies at the end of the paved road. Enjoy the landscape and
themountains at sunset.
The
Dead Sea Spa: Drive for about 45 minutes to the lowest
spot on earth, 1,300 feet below sea level. Take a swim where
it is impossible to sink. Bathing in the Dead Sea is a unique "unsinkable"
experience (like reading a newspaper in the water !) There are the
Rest house (Dead Sea Spa Hotel) with a German medical center where
a wideand open area with a free view of the sea and impressive surrounding
landscape.
Main
Spa: Drive for about 58 KM to the South of Amman and 180m below
Sea level. The area is surrounded by a range of high mountains
with its sixty natural hot mineral springs and medical resort of
Ashtar Hotel which includes a health clinic.
Ajloun:
Drive through the pine forest in Ajloun and Qalat Rabadh, the Arab
Castle of Crusader times.
Um
Jimal: Um Jimal which is 91 KM north of Amman, one of the most
mysterious and eerie antiquities sites in the Middle East. The sprawling,
silent, black basaltstone city of Um Jimal includes many houses,
churches, a Roman barrack, fort complex, public buildings, city
gates, water reservoir, canals and farmsteads.
Jerash:
Jerash, only half an hour drive north of Amman, was known as the
"Bompee of the East" Jerash is believed to have been one
of the stops of Jesus way to Jerusalem. There are grand ruins: Temples
of Artemis and Zeus, a vast Roman forum, Hadrians Triumphal Arch
and a mile-long street of columns.
Um
Qais, Himmeh, Pella: Um Qais 80 KM by road north of Amman, on
a hillside overlooking the Sea of Galilee and the Jordan Valley,
the ancient Roman city of poets, Gadara, whereJesus miracle of the
gaderene swine took place. The nearby hot springs of Himmeh.On the
banks of Wadi Jirm in the North Jordan Valley, 85 KM from Amman,
lies the city of Pella, which is believed to have been built around
310 BCThe City of Pella occupied a strategy position astride the
two main trade routes of Roman Middle East. An Ummayad city have
been cleared at the top of the mainmount of Pella.
Madaba,
Mount Nebo: Madaba is about 30 KM south of Amman, it is noted
for its fine mosaics. The most famous is the 6th century
mosaic map of Palestine, possibly the oldest of the Holy Land in
existence. Mount Nebo is 10 KM north west of Madaba. On its summit,
at Siyagha, there are the principal ruins which include a church
and rare mosaics withthe remarkable panorama of the Jordan Valley,
the Dead Sea and Jerusalem.
Kerak:
Where the Crusader castle of Kerak lies at the ring of a plateau
3,400 feet above sea level.
The
Desert Castles: East of Amman and dotting the wide desert are
a string of 8th century "Qasars" or castles built
by the Omayyad Caliphs of Damascus as Hunting lodges. Best preserved
of them and most interesting to visit are Qasar Kharaneh, builtfor
defense, and Qasar Amra with its beautiful frescoes showing lively
scenes of Omayyad times. Beyond the castles lies Azraq Oasis, the
only permanent bodyof water in 12,000 square miles of desert, and
a migratory for hundreds of speciesof birds. Qasar Al Azraq, the
black basalt fort originally built by Roman legionariesthat Lawrence
of Arabia used as head-quarters during the Arab Revolt.
Aqaba:
Aqaba is situated at the southern most tip of Jordan on the Red
Sea, approximately 350 miles south of Amman. It can be reached
either by the Kings Highway
or theswifter Desert Highway route. The Royal Jordanian operates
daily flights fromAmman. Flight time is forty minutes. Aqaba
resort value has been enhanced by the kind weather and clean environment.
Temperature ranges between 33 degrees Celsius in the summer and
17 degreesCelsius in the winter. A variety of marine activities
including swimming, snorkeling and diving, water skiing, paddle
boating, sailing and otherwater sports, Other activities include
tennis, squash, camel and horsebackriding. Also, there is the Marine
Science Station which provides a live display of the wonders of
the underwater world of the Red Sea. A variety of tours are offered
in Aqaba like Wadi Rum, Pharaoh Island and Sinai.
