Medical
Tours
An
increasing number of busy executives are taking time out to explore
the opportunities and benefits of health tourism. and the good
news is that Jordan has already tapped into this niche market
with it’s extensive and established network of treatment centers,
spars and luxury resorts.
Jordan
is fast proving an ideal and unique destination for the incentive
traveler to unwind from the stresses of daily life. Its many health-orientated
facilities and resorts are located close to the mineral-rich Dead
Sea, the northernmost shores of which are only 40 minutes drive
from Amman international Airport, and an area which is developing
into one of the leading tourism hubs in Jordan and the Middle
East.
The
Dead Sea may be completely devoid of animal or plant life, but
its healing powers for humans have been well documented for many
centuries. Today its natural attributes are harnessed for the
treatment of skin ailments, arthritis, gynecological diseases,
circulation problems, rheumatism, allergies, respiratory problems
and muscle cramps.
The
Dead Sea is a proven healer, due largely to its high salt and
mineral content. At 290 grammes of salt per liter of water, the
water is almost 10 times more saline than the world’s Oceans,
meaning that it has exceptional floating power- a benefits which
is used in physiotherapy treatment.
The
water has particularly high concentrations of calcium, magnesium,
bromine and bitumen, which all have beneficial properties for
the skin. The shoreline of the Dead Sea also contains, in places,
a mineral-rich, black therapeutic mud, which helps activate blood
circulation and alleviate joint pain, as well as being used for
beauty treatment.
The
climate in the Dead Sea area is said to be therapeutic too, with
climatic therapy becoming increasingly popular among the resorts
of the area. A number of unique factors combine to give the Dead
Sea ideal conditions for year – round climatic therapy: as well
as receiving more than 300 days of sunshine per year, the damaging
UVB rays which causes sunburn are filtered naturally due to high
evaporation rates on the surface of the water, making sunbathing
an altogether safer experience!
The
Dead Sea’s unique and spectacular location at more than 400 meters
below sea level also means that atmospheric pressure is high and
oxygen concentrations in the pure, dry and pollen-free air are
some 10 per cent higher than on Mediterranean coasts.
Free
been cited for successful treatment of psoriasis, neurodermitis,
ichtyosis, arthritis, and arthritis. According to research, tests
show that the effects of climatic therapy continue for longer
periods than other methods of treatment. A recent Irish study
found that 29 per cent of patients with psoriasis were completely
cured following treatment at a leading spa medical center on the
banks of the Dead Sea. Some 59 per cent of the patients achieved
what it said were ‘good and clear’ results, 10 per cent were satisfactory
and only two per cent of patients achieved ‘poor’ results at the
Dead Sea Spa Hotel.
The
hotel is one of a large number along the eastern coast of the
Dead Sea, and says that it offers a Skin and Joint Diseases Clinic,
a dermatology treatment center and a medical center, in addition
to the usual facilities on offer at a four star hotel.
While
the recommended course of treatment for psoriasis is three to
four weeks, there’s plenty on offer for those with less time at
their disposal, however.
Springs
and baths close to the Dead Sea also offer thermal treatments
which, as well as being physically beneficial, are good for the
mind too. At the Ma’in springs, mineral-rich waters heated to
63 C by underground lava fissures feed a number of springs in
the area, offering a unique, fun and truly therapeutic experience
for the thousands of bathers, which visit every year. A resort,
the Mercure Ma’in Thermal Spa Hotel, is said to offer a wide variety
of services, including mud wrapping, jet showers, underwater massage,
a hydro jet bed, a mud facial, electrotherapy and cosmetology
treatment.
Jordan
is constantly improving its health-related tourism infrastructure
for new visitors looking for something a little different during
their time off.
